## Air quality progress falls short of health goals

Seven out of ten schools in Barcelona are exposed to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution above the European Union’s legal threshold due to take effect in 2030, according to the Barcelona Public Health Agency’s 2025 annual report. While air quality has improved significantly since 2018, only 26% of schools meet the upcoming 20 µg/m³ limit for NO2, and none meet the stricter World Health Organization (WHO) guideline of 10 µg/m³. The average NO2 level around schools was 24 µg/m³ in 2025, a 40% reduction from 2018\. This marks historic lows for the city and shows progress toward the EU’s 2030 target. However, it remains more than double the WHO’s recommended level.

## Uneven exposure across districts

Pollution exposure varies widely by neighbourhood. Dreta de l'Eixample recorded the highest NO2 concentration at 32 µg/m³, while Vallvidrera, Tibidabo, and les Planes registered 14 µg/m³. Monitoring stations in Eixample, Gràcia-Sant Gervasi, Ciutadella, and Poblenou all exceeded the 2030 threshold, while Sants, Vall d’Hebron, and Palau Reial remained below. Particulate matter (PM2.5) levels have also dropped 25% since 2018, reaching an average of 12 µg/m³. While this is below the current EU limit, it remains more than double the WHO’s 5 µg/m³ guideline. Vehicle emissions contribute up to 40% of PM2.5, with the rest coming from brake and tyre wear and construction dust.

> The positive trend in air quality shows the impact of urban planning, but children remain vulnerable, especially in central districts.

## Health impacts and ongoing efforts

Improved air quality has reduced pollution-related health burdens. In 2025, 1,100 deaths were attributed to air pollution, down from 1,900 seven years earlier. Childhood asthma cases linked to pollution fell to 600 annually, and lung cancer diagnoses due to pollution dropped from 170 in 2018 to 90 in 2025\. If 2030 standards are met, deaths could fall to 800 annually, childhood asthma cases to 500, and lung cancer diagnoses to 70\. The Barcelona City Council continues initiatives such as superblocks, green axes, and Low Emission Zone restrictions to further reduce traffic emissions.

- NO2 levels down 40% (2018–2025) near schools
- Only 26% of schools meet EU 2030 NO2 standard
- All schools below current 40 µg/m³ limit
- 0% meet WHO’s 10 µg/m³ NO2 guideline
- PM2.5 down 25%, but still above WHO target
