## Pressure Mounts on Education Department

Nearly 400 student families' associations (AFAs) have formally petitioned the Catalan Department of Education to resolve the ongoing suspension of school camps and trips. A total of 391 AFAs have signed a collective petition submitted by the Federated Associations of Student Families of Catalonia (aFFaC), demanding concrete measures to preserve or restore these educational activities in public schools. The petition, registered on Tuesday 3rd November 2026, responds to growing concern among families after an unprecedented number of schools, now reaching 1,300, suspended trips and camps due to staff demands. The Department of Education has not yet issued a public response.

## Educational and Social Impact at Stake

aFFaC argues that school trips and camps are essential components of education, helping students connect classroom learning with real-world environments, build social cohesion, and develop personal autonomy. The federation warns that the disappearance of these activities represents a significant loss of educational opportunity. In a statement, aFFaC acknowledged the legitimacy of teachers’ labour demands but insisted that student rights should not be compromised. It called on the Department to address the underlying organisational, economic, and staffing issues preventing the activities from going ahead.

> Guaranteeing adequate working conditions and preserving the educational opportunities for students are not incompatible objectives.

Jordi de Carreras, president of aFFaC, stated that families do not want to see students’ right to quality education pitted against teachers’ labour rights. He urged the Department to assume responsibility, resume negotiations with unions, and find solutions without transferring the burden to families.

- 391 AFAs have signed the petition
- 1,300 schools affected by trip suspensions
- Activities include excursions and residential school camps

## Inequality and Parent-Led Organising Risks

The federation has warned that if the administration fails to act, the responsibility for organising trips may fall increasingly on families’ associations. This could lead to disparities based on financial means, availability, and organisational capacity, deepening inequalities between schools and students. The petition calls for the Department to resume negotiations with education unions and open a formal dialogue space with the entire educational community, including families, to address systemic challenges and ensure equitable access to these experiences.
