The unrest began mid-afternoon around Plaça Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer, where the Mossos d'Esquadra intervened to prevent a direct confrontation between members of the far-right group Núcleo Nacional and a thousand-strong anti-fascist demonstration organised by the Socialist Youth Organization. Núcleo Nacional had called the gathering under the slogan 'Catalan identity is Hispanic identity', drawing a significant counter-protest. The police formed a cordon to separate the groups, using limited defensive force after demonstrators hurled stones, bottles, fireworks and paint at officers. --- ## Spreading Unrest and Concerted Protests > The police made several charges to disperse crowds and prevent escalation. After Núcleo Nacional members left the area, the anti-fascist protest moved down Passeig de Sant Joan towards the Arc de Triomf, where concerts were taking place as part of the independence movement's closing events. At the Arc de Triomf and surrounding areas, violence escalated. Protesters set fire to street containers and urban furniture, and threw objects at police. The Mossos reported 17 arrests in this zone, nine of them minors.
